The Value-Added Program supports the continued diversification, innovation, growth and prosperity in Alberta’s value-added food and bio-industrial sectors. Processors can apply for grants for value-added projects that increase company sales and production capacity, expand market opportunities and create jobs in Alberta.

Eligible Capital Expenses:

  • Processing equipment (purchase only)

  • Food safety equipment (e.g., metal detectors, thermometers, pH meters)

  • Processing software (e.g., traceability systems)

  • Third-party engineering fees for equipment setup
    Note: Leased equipment is not eligible.

Eligible Non-Capital Expenses:

  • Training for new technology, equipment, or automation

Food Safety Improvement
Eligible Non-Capital Expenses:

  • Development and implementation of food safety systems (e.g., audits, validation, certifications such as SQF, IFS, BRC)

  • Training on food safety technologies and processes

New Product and Process Development
Eligible Non-Capital Expenses:

  • Sensory and shelf-life testing

  • Nutritional and health claim validation

  • Attribute and environmental declarations

  • Regulatory studies (non-food)

  • Scale-up trials and formulation (including trial ingredients)

  • Process improvements

  • Label and package printing (up to 2,500 units per product)

  • First-time brand design

Market Development and Access
Eligible Non-Capital Expenses:

  • Feasibility and market readiness studies

  • Marketing and export plans

  • Market support materials (sell sheets, point of sale, presentations)

  • Capital investment strategy

  • First-time certification audits

  • E-commerce site development and translation

  • Online platform enhancements

  • In-store and market demonstrations (excluding product and shipping costs)

  • Tradeshow and conference fees (maximum 2 attendees per event)
