Eligible
Purposes

Supports intensive hog or sheep facilities in adopting practices, technologies, or facility modifications that improve environmental performance—specifically by adapting to climate change and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Examples of eligible activities and costs include:

Efficiency & Emissions Analysis

  • Energy audits or equivalent emissions-reduction assessments

Building Envelope, Lighting & Ventilation Upgrades (materials and installation — eligibility conditional on GHG reduction, e.g., reduced natural gas or electricity use)

  • Roof and wall insulation

  • Energy-efficient doors and windows

  • Switch to LED lighting

  • Heating pads replacing heat lamps

  • Ventilation improvements (e.g., side- to chimney-mount, shutters, winter covers)

  • Boiler heaters replacing inefficient systems

  • Energy monitoring systems, smart controllers, and related equipment

On-Farm Energy Source Improvements

  • Wind, geothermal, or solar energy systems (generation, switching, or storage)

  • Water-use equipment upgrades that reduce energy consumption and GHG emissions

    • Example: Variable flow pumps

  • Freight, labour, and third-party installation costs

Liquid Manure Management for Emissions Reduction

  • Anaerobic digestion using off-farm organics; converting biogas into electricity, heat, or renewable natural gas (RNG)

  • Acidification of liquid manure

  • Methane conversion technologies:

    • Collectors, flares, catalytic oxidation systems, bio-filters

  • Impermeable negative-air covers with methane/biogas capture

  • Solid-liquid separation systems

  • Specialized equipment for efficient manure application:

    • Injection systems, flow meters, draglines, reels, openers, applicators, agitators
(Eligibility based on demonstrated nutrient efficiency, such as injection or reduced rate per acre; swine producers may benefit from equipment ownership vs. hiring)
