Agriculture Stewardship

The Agriculture Stewardship Program is designed to increase environmental sustainability, and climate change mitigation and adaptation, by providing technical and financial support to the development, promotion and implementation of Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs). Activity areas include soil conservation, climate change mitigation, soil health, nutrient management, integrated pest management, riparian management, water quality, water use efficiency, and on-farm product and waste storage. The program will support environmental protection activities and promote the sustainable use of natural resources. Approved projects are funded on a cost-shared or per acre basis.

  • Erosion Control: Structures to reduce soil erosion

  • Tillage Improvements: Spring tillage of forages, strip tillage, transition to zero tillage, reduced tillage adoption

  • Crop Rotation Enhancements: Incorporation of soil-building crops, increased use of perennial forages

  • Manure Application: Improved practices for applying liquid manure

2. Manure & Livestock Management

  • Storage Systems: Merit-based upgrades to manure storage systems

  • Animal Areas: Installation of covered feedlots and exercise yards

  • Feed Storage: Improvements in silage storage systems

3. Agroforestry

  • Innovations: Implementation of agroforestry techniques

4. Water & Supply Management

  • Livestock Water Access: Installation of alternate watering systems

  • Fencing & Crossings: Riparian fencing and livestock/machinery stream crossings

  • Water Efficiency: Improved irrigation and water supply efficiency, water treatment systems

  • Well Protection: Measures to safeguard water sources

5. Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

  • Monitoring: Data-driven pest monitoring systems

  • Crop Techniques: Use of pest-suppressant crops

  • Biological Control: Invertebrate-based pest control solutions

  • Physical Barriers: Structures to physically deter insect pests

6. Demonstration Trials

  • Agri-Environmental: On-farm environmental demonstration trial projects
